Tylos Burial Mounds

Bahrain has many thousands of burial mounds scattered all over the southern part of the island. They date as far back as the Dilmun civilization (4500 BC). Nearly all these graves have long since been looted. This particular group of mounds from the Tylos (Greek) period was being excavated when we visited. The workers showed us two graves they were actively working on, which still contained skeletons though not many grave goods, just a few intact pieces of pottery and some jewelry. Finding even this much is fairly unusual; most of the looted graves were simply left open to the elements.
