Bahariya Oasis is a major agricultural area in the western desert a few hours' drive from Cairo. While this is the site of the "golden mummies", magnificent burials from the Roman era, neither the mummies nor the valley where they are being excavated can be photographed.
The black desert has intrusions of volcanic basalt in limestone. It lies near Bahariya.
White Desert National Park lies further south, near Farafra Oasis.
