Xunantunich

Xunantunich is a Mayan Ruin on a hill overlooking the Mopan River. This was the first place we visited on our trip.

Compound Excavated and unexcavated Temple

Several buildings have been excavated.

The friezes (carvings) have been reconstructed from modern materials. The original limestone would decay too quickly if left exposed to the elements.

Climbing a temple Inside From the top

We climbed one pyramid. From the top you can see Guatemala.

Xunantunich is across the river from the road. The ferry which takes people and vehicles across is hand-operated. Souvenirs are available, of course.
