Nearly 250 species of mammals are found in Costa Rica.

Agoutis:

Central American agouti, Dasyprocta punctata

Bats: More than half of the mammal species found in Costa Rica are bats.

(identification tentative) lesser sac-winged (white-lined) bat, Saccopteryx leptura

Cats: Six species of wild cats are found in Costa Rica. We did not see the jaguarundi, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, or the oncilla (little spotted cat, tigrillo), Leopardus tigrinus.

Jaguars:

Jaguar, Panthera onca

Margays:

Margay, Leopardus wiedii

Ocelots:

Ocelot, Leopardus pardalis

Pumas:

Puma (cougar, mountain lion, catamount), Puma concolor

Coatis:

White-nosed coati (coatimundi), Nasua narica

Grisons:

Greater grison, Galictis vittata

Kinkajous:

Kinkajou, Potos flavus

Mice:

(tentative identification) Alston's brown (singing, short-tailed singing) mouse, Scotinomys teguina

Monkeys: Four species of monkeys are found in Costa Rica.

Capuchin monkeys:

Psnamanian White-headed (white-faced) capuchin, Cebus imitator

Howler monkeys:

Mantled howler monkey, Alouatta palliata

Spider monkeys:

Geoffroy's spider monkey, Ateles geoffroyi

Squirrel monkeys:

Central American squirrel monkey, Saimiri oerstedii

Peccaries:

White-lipped peccary, Tayassu pecari

Sloths: There are two species of sloths. They are related to anteaters and tamanduas.

Brown three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus

Hoffman's two-toed sloth, Choloepus hoffmanni

Squirrels: Five species of squirrels are found in Costa Rica, though we only saw the most common one.
